Description

Description

Greek terracotta sculptural group depicting Silenus with the young Dionysus and another child.

An impressive ancient Greek terracotta group showing Silenus, the legendary tutor, guardian, and companion of Dionysus, accompanied by two young children. Silenus is depicted as an elderly, bald, and heavily bearded man, with distinctive and expressive features that emphasize his advanced age. Beside Silenus stands the young Dionysus, who is shown holding a bunch of grapes—one of the most characteristic symbols associated with the Greek god of wine, viticulture, fertility, and abundance. With his left arm, Silenus supports another young child, whose identity remains unknown. This remarkable terracotta sculptural group presents a fascinating example of ancient Greek mythological imagery.
