Description

Ancient Hellenistic Double-Faced Satyr Bead
Date: Hellenistic Period, ca. 4th–1st Century BC

An exceptional Hellenistic figural bead masterfully carved from a red stone in the form of a double-faced Satyr head. Both sides display expressive bearded faces with deeply carved eyes, a broad nose, pronounced moustache, and thick beard, rendered in the bold and highly stylized manner characteristic of Hellenistic miniature sculpture.

The Satyr, a mythological companion of Dionysus, symbolized fertility, vitality, celebration, and the untamed forces of nature. Such representations were popular throughout the Hellenistic world and were frequently worn as personal ornaments or protective amulets believed to ward off evil influences.
