An ancient Mesopotamian terracotta head representing Humbaba (Huwawa), the formidable guardian of the Cedar Forest. The face is modeled with strongly emphasized features, including large prominent eyes, heavy arched brows, a broad facial structure, and a powerful, intimidating expression characteristic of representations of Humbaba during the Old Babylonian period.
Humbaba is one of the most famous supernatural figures of ancient Mesopotamian mythology. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, he was appointed guardian of the sacred Cedar Forest and was ultimately confronted and slain by the heroes Gilgamesh and Enkidu.
