Cypriot Terracotta Horse and Rider
Cypro-Archaic II Period, 6th century BC, circa 600–500 BC
A hand-modelled terracotta figurine depicting a stylised horse and rider. The horse is characterised by an elongated upright neck, projecting muzzle, solid body and simplified legs, while the rider is schematically modelled and closely integrated with the animal.
The coarse buff clay and distinctive modelling are characteristic of Cypro-Archaic terracotta production. Closely related horse-and-rider figurines are known from Amathus, Cyprus, including excavated examples preserved in the
British Museum, (British Museum Museum No.: 1894,1101.37)
