Description

Iron Age stamp seal features a depiction of the sacred tree, a motif that holds religious and cultural symbolism from 1000 to 720 BC. The central palm tree is flanked by two dancing figures, a common theme in seals from this era, though sometimes the figures are seated or standing. This seal offers a fascinating glimpse into the spiritual practices and artistic traditions of the time.

The stamp seal prominently displays a palm tree flanked by two dancing figures. This motif has been widely interpreted as part of the “tree cult,” symbolizing the sacred grove of Asherah, a concept well-documented in biblical sources.

According to O. Keel, the scene represents the sacred grove of Asherah, as referenced in various biblical texts:

  • “You shall not set up an asherah (‘sacred pole’) or any kind of pole beside the altar of the Lord your God” (Deuteronomy 16:21).
  • “Pull down the altar of Baal which belongs to your father and cut down the asherah which is beside it” (Judges 6:25).
  • “He [Ahab] erected an altar to Baal in the temple of Baal which he built in Samaria. Ahab also made an asherah” (I Kings 16:32-33).

The considerable production of I this motif shows that it was deeply ingrained in the consciousness of the local populace.

Seals like this one were used to authenticate documents, secure goods, and sometimes as personal amulets. The imagery of the palm tree and dancing figures would have conveyed religious significance and possibly invoked protection or blessings from the sacred grove of Asherah.
