Ancient Islamic coin, Umayyad Caliphate, Saffuriya (Sepphoris) mint during the Umayyad Caliphate. Saffuriya, located approximately three miles northwest of Nazareth.
This undated coin is an excellent representation of the Umayyad period’s monetary practices and religious inscriptions.
- Obverse Inscription:
- The central inscription reads “لا اله الا الله وحده” (There is no god but Allah alone) within three concentric circles.
- Reverse Inscription:
- “محمد رسول الله” (Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)
- Marginal legend reads “بسم الله ضرب هذا الفلس بصفورية” (In the name of Allah, this fals was struck in Saffuriya).
