Description

Hellenistic Terracotta Bust of a Distinguished Male Figure
Eastern Mediterranean, Syria and the Levant
circa 3rd–2nd century BC

A finely modeled Hellenistic terracotta bust representing a mature and distinguished male figure.

He wears a distinctive cloth headdress, arranged around the head with a portion visibly descending behind the neck. A small central feature above the forehead appears to belong to the headdress or its fastening. The unusual head covering may indicate rank, religious status, or a particular cultural identity.

The figure is wrapped in a heavily folded Greek-style mantle. One hand firmly gathers the drapery across the chest, while the other holds a small attribute, apparently a flower, possibly a lotus.
The combination of mature physiognomy, elaborate headdress, formal drapery and held attribute suggests a figure of special status—perhaps a dignitary, priest, philosopher, or votary.

His age is deliberately emphasized by the treatment of the face and particularly the strongly articulated folds of the neck, suggesting that the figure was intended to represent an older man of importance rather than an idealized youth.
