Ottoman silver with black Nelo amulet (Quran Box) chest ornament
Dated 1327H and with the name of the owner (Raheem iskandr)
engraved and decorated/ eight star point in a shape of a dome in the center inside 10 Crecent
opened from the upper part.

Koran boxes or Hirz in Arabic are typically amulets that contain a verse from the Koran, as
the name already suggests.
However they can also contain some sort of black pitch to prevent the silver from denting or mare likely to add extra cheap weight for the silver-dealer.
Koran boxes are in fact also talismans The smaller Koran-boxes are for children.
S.M. Zwerner writes in 1902 in his book Topsy Turvy land Arabia pictured for Childrens a few
verses from the Koran are written out and put in a leather or silver case and also tied around
arm or neck of the-baby.
