Description
Description
Ancient Roman Marbled Glass Bottle
1st century CE / Eastern
Mediterranean
Marbled, yellow, translucent,
a few large bubbles / Blown
8.8Cm
Everted rim, partially folded
inward, cylindrical neck, squat
globular body, concave base. The
marvered white trails on sides
were wound around the glass
bubble and drawn upward before
final blowing.
The shapes of the earliest blown-glass vessels, dating from the beginning of the Roman period, are based upon the spherical or pear-shaped form of the glass bubble. In some respects, however, these new vessels preserve the aesthetic concepts of glass objects made prior to the invention of glassblowing. For instance, shades such as deep blue and brown remained popular as substitutes for lapis lazuli and agate.
